2022

We are thankful for an improved year regarding the pandemic!  Our daily life is basically back to normal; I haven't worn a face mask in months, and Bob only has worn one in Tokyo and at a select few work events.  Covid still exists and there are boosters a-plenty for those who want them, but people are also free to go about their daily lives.

We enjoyed more travel this year and also really enjoyed our time on Jordan Lake and Falls Lake as a part of the Freedom Boat Club, which we joined at the end of  May.  We went out on the water nearly every weekend from early June through the beginning of November.  We can't wait for warmer weather to get back to the lake again!

Here are the highlights:

March:  Anna & Gina to Universal Studios, porch project completed, Anna played for the school soccer team, Anna to Sound to Sea field trip, Erin to Washington DC with school

April:  Hilton Head with the Summer cousins for spring break, Erin's piano recital

May:  Bob's 40th birthday in New Zealand as a side trip from a work trip to Sydney, Bob to Valencia, Spain, Anna's birthday!

June:  Erin's dance recitals, Erin & Gina to Clearwater Beach, family trip to Chicago and Indiana

July:  Hardwood floors refinished along with family + Finley trip to Smith Mountain Lake, VA

September:  Bob and Gina visit Ireland (Bob went for work), Anna played for the school volleyball team

October:  Anna to Washington DC with school, Erin's birthday!

December:  Bob traveled to Tokyo and London, family trip to NYC, Christmas!

It was a great year!  We are hoping for good health and happiness for everyone in 2023!

December!

December is up there in the top 2 busiest months of the year, and this December did not disappoint!  I can speak for myself in saying that I will never again take for granted all of the fun social events after living through the pandemic.  So, while the holiday season is very busy, I for one am grateful for each and every busy day!

The month began with Bob's first day of his "trip around the world" (Tokyo and London for work).  We ladies celebrated the family Christmas Tree Cake Day after school and ballet were over.

Friday, Anna had futsal in the evening.  Saturday was a busy day: Erin had her holiday meet-up with fellow piano students, then Anna and I watched Sarah in the fun and festive Holiday Cabaret put on by the dance school.  It was super cute!  Between that, we did a telehealth visit for Anna's red eye and got some antibiotic eye drops for that.  After the dance show, 4 of Anna's closest friends came over for a Christmas-themed sleepover.  It was a lot of fun and was a wild time!

Sunday, we recovered and then enjoyed attending Liz and David's Christmas Soiree, back after a 2-year hiatus.  What a weekend!

The next week was super busy around here with lots of holiday events at school, including the annual Christmas shopping extravaganza for the kids that I help with and a cookie swap for the teachers (with cookies baked by parents).  I hosted book club on Monday, we had the regular activities, and Anna had a fun sleepover with ice skating outing for Gracie's birthday on Friday.

Bob returned home from his successful world tour on Saturday evening, and we enjoyed the return of the neighborhood holiday social event and hayride on Sunday!

The following week was a little more calm (Finley celebrated his 4th birthday on Monday the 12th!)

through 3pm Thursday, when we headed out on our fun trip to New York City!  The trip recap can be found HERE.

We got back Sunday and jumped into holiday crunch time, plus Anna going ice skating with Lyla on Monday (3 boys from school were there, but thankfully it wasn't too awkward), Erin's 14-year-old checkup and cookie baking on Tuesday, Erin and I enjoying the Carolina Ballet Nutcracker on Wednesday (it was wonderful!), and some family mini golf fun on Thursday.

Anna caught an early ride to Concord on Friday to stay over at Grandma and Grandpa's with Logan, Ansley, and Ben.  The rest of us made some food and met them there Saturday morning for a super fun Christmas Eve celebration!  The California cousins joined us via FaceTime for presents, then we had a yummy lasagna lunch and played some Farkle since it was too cold to go outside.  We headed back around 3pm and got a call on the way back that some Tierneys were sick and couldn't have their Elf Party, so we decided to go to 7pm Christmas Eve mass instead.  It was very nice and not too crowded, and we really enjoyed not having to go on Christmas morning!

Santa did visit our house, and we had a great time opening presents on Christmas morning.  Highlights were matching NCSU hoodies for Anna and Bob, Air Pods for Anna, a new desk chair and comforter for Erin's bed, and some great kitchen gear for me.  Finley also got some snacks and toys!  We had a great day just relaxing and enjoying time together.  We had ham and homemade mac and cheese for dinner.  It was a very Merry Christmas!

The next day, I was up at 5:30am to hit the sales for next year's Santa's Secret Workshop!  Erin joined me around 8am and we cleaned out 5 Walmart stores and 1 Michaels store with 2 trips home to unload.  The stores weren't as well-stocked as they had been in the past, but I've been more successful with finding stuff online lately, so hopefully it will work out in the end.  Our college friends Yannis and Sofia were in town from California and brought their kids over for dinner.  We had a wonderful time seeing them and catching up!  Their kids are so well-behaved, and the girls enjoyed a marathon Scrabble game with them.  Tuesday was more shopping, combined with Erin going to Olivia's belated birthday party and the rest of us introducing Anna to the Melting Pot!  Erin had a blast at Olivia's house, walking in the woods and painting, and then the 5 girls and Olivia's very brave mom went to dinner at Goji Bistro (Chinese)!

Wednesday and Thursday, Grandma and Ansley came up to visit!  We had a really nice time and put them right to work with sorting, packing, and driving 3 car loads of our shopping haul up to school and unloading it.  We also had a yummy meatloaf dinner and pancake breakfast, walked Finley, and played a few rounds of Boggle.  After they headed back, we then had a great visit with Tom, Pam, Jimmy, and Danny!  The kids played outside, played the Switch, and played a game of Life while the adults attempted a game of Wingspan.  Thanks to Pam, she was a pro at the game and taught Bob and me how to play!

Friday was a little calmer with the main event being Anna, I, and 2 of her friends trying the ice skating rink at the Red Hat Amphitheater.  It was a beautiful day, but maybe a little too beautiful because the sun and 74 degrees melted the ice!  It was super slippery!  Luckily, there were also some food trucks and games set up, so they could take breaks from the danger.  They had a great time.

Our Wolfpack did not have a great time at their bowl game that day, however.  Today, was sadly the day of taking down all of our Christmas decorations.  They served us well!  We also did the family cooking "week" (one night rescheduled due to other events).  I made chicken marsala on the 20th, Anna made BBQ beef sandwiches on the 21st, Erin made Asian chicken or beef rice bowls on the 22nd, and Bob made belated chicken Pad Thai on the 31st.  They were all delicious!!

We are spending New Year's Eve at home watching some football and playing games.

So, it was a really fun and  BUSY month!  We are thankful for every minute of this normalcy!

New York City!

Bob had the great idea for us to all spend a few days in New York around Christmas.  The kids were excited about the idea, so we booked it about a month ago.  We left Thursday the 15th after school; they had to miss a half day of school on Friday, which was a fun party day and Christmas dress down day, but they were still ok with missing.  We flew out of RDU on a 5pm flight to LaGuardia which had no issues other than some weather-related bumps.  We got sandwiches and wraps to take on the flight for dinner.  We admired the "new" LaGuardia terminal on our way to the free shuttle bus to the subway, which we rode to near our hotel.

We stayed at the INNSiDE at New York Nomad in Chelsea, which is the area that Bob usually stays when he goes for work since that's where the Google office is located.  By the time we got to our rooms, it was almost 8pm, so we just unpacked and settled in.  It should be noted that this was the first time that we have gotten 2 hotel rooms.  This hotel was a good deal, but only had 1 queen bed per room.  Rather than bringing 2 air mattresses, we opted for separate rooms.  We ended up with rooms across the hall from each other, which worked out great because the kids then got the quiet side of the building while we had the street side.  It was also good that we got the two rooms because they were rather small and it would have been tight to get 2 air mattresses and 2 more bags into a room!

We slept great and headed out on foot to the nearest Brooklyn Bagel and Coffee Co.  It was crowded and we felt like locals there!  The parents got bacon, egg, and cheese bagels, Anna got a bacon and butter bagel, and Erin got a plain bagel.  Everyone except Erin was a big fan!

It was raining this morning, and the rain continued all day into the evening, so we considered our list and decided to go visit the Google offices first since it was nearby and we could stay indoors.  We had a quick walk (each hotel room had an umbrella, plus Erin brought one, so we were pretty well equipped for the rain) to one of the buildings and got ourselves checked in.  Bob gave us a great tour for a couple of hours, showing us where he sits when he's there, his coworkers' desks, and all of the Google fun items like scooters, Lego room, game room, microkitchens, cafes, artwork, special seating, soundproof pods, meeting rooms, etc.  We really enjoyed the tour!

From there, we went to the next building over (Google inhabits 3 buildings in a row) and looked around the first floor Chelsea Market for a little while, then went upstairs and had (free) lunch at a Google cafe.  It was really good, though a little too healthy for some of us (Anna).

After a short tour of that building, we hopped on the subway back to the Rockefeller Center area and saw the tree and a few brave ice skaters in the rain.  Since it was still raining, we decided to check out some of the famous stores in the area (Lululemon, Nike, and Nintendo, to name a few).  The girls had a blast with that!

After some shopping, we went to the highly-rated NY Pizza Suprema for dinner and had a super yummy pizza dinner.  We each got 2 slices, and they were huge!  All of the types we got were really good.  We then walked over to Macy's and admired the store from the outside as well as from the inside.  The kids got some souvenirs there.  We also went into Forever 21 (not a New York icon, but Anna wanted to see it).  Then it was back to the hotel via subway for the night.

After the bagel issue on Friday, we opted for Dunkin' Donuts near our hotel for breakfast on Saturday instead.  It was a hit all around.  We discussed our priorities of what we wanted to see that day, which ranged from ballet to a show to ice skating to a museum to more shopping.  We knew it would be tough to do all of those, so we first tackled ice skating.  I had not booked any skating tickets ahead of time, so the Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and Bryant Park were all booked.  It was probably good that I hadn't booked them for Friday with the bad weather.  So, we took the subway over to Bryant Park anyway in hopes that there would be walk-up tickets (there weren't), but we checked out the rink and walked around the really cute holiday market there.

From there, we found an ice skating option in Brooklyn and decided to go for that.  It was about a 35 minute subway ride each way.  We hopped off at Prospect Park and had a nice walk through the south end of the park to get to the ice rink.  We got our skates and just made our 11:00am skate time.  Erin gave skating a good try, but decided that it was not for her and watched us for the second half of the 90 minutes.  Anna had recently been ice skating with friends in Cary and was pretty good.  Bob was the most skilled skater of all of us with his backwards skating!

So, we skated for awhile and then got lunch at the cafe at the park.  We then rode the subway back to Manhattan.

Upon arriving back, we decided that we wanted to try to get last-minute show tickets at the TKTS booth that we had used in the summer of 2018 when we had that unexpected 2-day layover in the city.  Erin and I stood in the line (which looked very long but was really not that bad).  Bob and Anna checked out the M&M, Hershey, and Krispy Kreme stores nearby and brought us some snacks in line.  We were able to score tickets to the Rockettes at 4pm that day, which was our first choice!  Yay!  We decided to ride the subway and drop stuff back off at our hotel and have a short rest, but it ended up being a very short rest once we realized how early we needed to be to Radio City Music Hall.  So, it was back on the subway (we tried a bus, but it didn't show up) for a short time.  We got to RCMH, got in, and found our seats just in time.  This place is huge and is super pretty inside.  We loved the chandeliers!  The seats were great - in the first (of 3) mezzanines, in the middle section, on the aisle.  AND - they were way less than half the price of buying tickets ahead!

We enjoyed the show very much - there were some fun effects, awesome music, and great dancing!  It ended around 5:30pm and we entered the super crowded and crazy area outside.

For many blocks, it was just people everywhere and we vertically challenged people couldn't see anything.  After trying to find another dinner option, we gave up and got Chipotle, which was not too crowded and was yummy.  From there, we walked to St. Patrick's Cathedral and saw it by night.  It was very pretty and also crowded, even at 7pm on a Saturday.  We enjoyed seeing the Christmas decorations and nativity.

After that, we walked over to Grand Central Station and admired the red and green lights inside of it, and then rode the short S train to another subway to our hotel.

Sunday morning, we got up and repeated the Dunkin breakfast, then walked a short way to St. John the Baptist church.  It was a beautiful church!  Sadly, there was probably fewer than 30-40 people in there for the 9:30am mass.  We enjoyed it, though.

We then walked back to the hotel, listening to the World Cup final game.  We packed up our stuff, checked out of the hotel, and made our way back to LaGuardia via subway and bus.  We got lunch in the terminal and enjoyed the fancy new fountain there, complete with Christmas-themed shows every 15 minutes.  We saw the end of the soccer game (Argentina won it in penalty kicks), then sat at our gate for awhile.  We got on the plane as scheduled, but after getting almost to the runway, they discovered a mechanical issue, so we had to turn around for repairs.  The whole delay ended up being almost an hour, so we called neighbor friend Kellie in as our backup to pick Finley up from the Pooch Pad.  Once we got going, all went well the rest of the way.

So, it was a really fun trip!  All of our pictures can be found HERE.  We loved seeing all of the awesome Christmas decorations around the city.  They really go all out.  We had some delicious food, did some really fun things, and just generally enjoyed seeing it all!

November!

November flew by, as it always does!  It was a beautiful, busy month, with many days off of school (I've heard it accurately called "No School November").  We started out with my favorite feast day, All Saint's Day!  Then the kids were off for 2 days for teacher conferences.  We spent those 2 days wrapping gifts for the school's Santa's Secret Workshop and thankfully got a lot done with just a few more rounds needed to be done at home.  Erin had her student visit day at Cardinal Gibbons on Friday the 4th, where she got to attend 3 junior-level classes, go to adoration, eat lunch with students, and learn more about the school.  She had a good time and was happy to be with one of her friends from school all day.  Anna had a fun babysitting gig for Tornado and Sheeba down the street for a few days, and we had our last-for-the-year-as-of-now boat ride on Saturday the 5th.

Bob worked at the Knights pasta dinner that evening, too.  Sunday, Erin and I went back to Gibbons (I am learning how to get there now after all of these admissions events!) for the open house.

Bob went to Lake Tahoe for work the next week and braved a heavy snowfall in his rental car.  Unfortunately, he wasn't able to explore the area very much due to a busy work schedule and the weather.  The kids were off again for Election Day, and Anna and Addie went to Defy for a little trampoline time.  Thursday, I was able to join the girls, one of their teachers, and 2 other boys on an off-site service project at the Durham Community Food Pantry run by Catholic Charities.  We had a great experience!  Bob returned on Saturday the 12th, Anna went shopping with friends, and Erin and I made some apple cider at Ms. Karen's annual party.  We also saw Ms. Karen the next day when she took some beautiful family photos of us!

The week of the 14th was our only full week of school/work this month!  Bob and I had our parent presentation at Gibbons on Tuesday (we are down to only 3 more admissions-related events to go; the end is in sight).  The rest of the week was fairly routine.  Anna and I enjoyed watching some middle school basketball on Friday, and we all had a blast at a Wolfpack volleyball game on Saturday (thankfully we were distracted by that and didn't have to watch the sad football game going on at the same time).

They had 1-1/2 days of school the next week, followed by Anna babysitting the afternoon of the 22nd.  Erin enjoyed a sleepover with Olivia for her birthday on the 23rd after a fun family outing for soccer and frisbee golf at the park, and we had a nice Thanksgiving at home on the 24th, except for Anna being a little under the weather that morning.

She bounced back quickly, though!  Friday, we watched a very exciting football game, along with some basketball and the World Cup, all going on at the same time.  Saturday, Bob and the girls headed to Concord to meet up with the cousins for some park time and a sleepover at the Summers' (change of camping plans due to rain).  I went on Sunday due to dog sitting, and we all had a super fun day with a taco lunch, baking sugar cookies, making a Christmas craft, playing Pit, looking at Grandma's pictures from Europe, boys' football game, girls playing with the little guys, doing our Christmas exchange drawing, and taking family pictures (not in that order)!  Whew!  It was so much fun!

The girls were still off on Monday and used the day to relax and get ready to go back to school.  Anna and I did some shopping for the sleepover that she's hosting on December 3rd.  Tuesday was back to school and back to the grind for 3 short weeks before Christmas break!  Bob has an exciting time ahead: he's going to Japan and then to London for work over the first 10 days of December!  Hopefully he will be able to see a few sights, especially in Tokyo, while he's there.

So, we are onward to the Christmas season...ready or not!

October!

October was busy as always!  I continue to be thankful for normalcy that I took for granted prior to 2020.  We started out with a fairly quiet rainy weekend, ending with a date afternoon to what I thought was a play that my mom friend Jenny was in, but she actually was not in it this season!  Whoops!  Bob and I still enjoyed doing something out of routine.  The week of the 3rd was busy with the usual events, ending with the Oktoberfest adult social at StMM.  On Saturday the 8th, Anna tried an open gym at a volleyball club in Fuquay.  She did a great job, but ended up deciding to do winter indoor soccer instead of the club.  Our wallet appreciates that!  Bob, Erin, Finley, and I took a boat ride while Anna was shopping with friends.  Sunday, we enjoyed a NCSU/UNC women's soccer game at UNC, and then Bob headed north to New York City for the week.

We ladies and Finley held down the fort the week of the 10th, including dance observation week (they have one in the fall and one in the spring).  Erin did a really great job!

Anna also had her last volleyball game of the season on Thursday.  They did a really great job but couldn't quite make the win happen.  Still, to only lose one game all season was pretty amazing!  Way to go, ladies!  It was so fun to watch them improve and gain confidence this season.

On Saturday the 15th, we had a busy day including a day trip to Charlotte for the annual Buddy Walk at UNCC!  It was a beautiful day, and we had a great time!  Then we all went back to Elliott's house and had a great lunch/birthday celebration for Erin.  So much fun!

On our way home, we dropped Anna off at Addie's for her birthday sleepover.  Sunday, Bob, Finley, and I went out on a boat for a few hours.  It was warmer than the week before, peaceful, and very relaxing!  Anna and I also went to the 7pm mass at the cathedral because she missed Sunday morning.  That was beautiful, and we really enjoyed it.

Anna went on her class trip to DC from the 18th to the 20th.  They walked a LOT, saw a LOT, and had a really great time!  We missed her!

They timed it well, coming back Thursday night and then having a teacher workday on Friday to recover.  Erin had a blast with her friends on Friday - they came here and then we went to Kabuki for dinner!

Erin was busy on Saturday with a piano group meet-up as well as a dance master class, then baking her birthday cake.

Sunday was Erin's actual birthday, which you can read more about HERE.

Monday the 24th was back to normal, plus Bob took a 4-day trip to tropical Detroit for work.  Anna had a sick day on Tuesday, but it was just a cold.  I did a few things at school, and we were just generally busy.  Friday was a really fun and busy day - school trunk or treat and middle school dance!  We did a movie theater-themed trunk, Bob helped at the Knights grilling tent, and the girls broke it down at the dance.  Such a fun night!

Saturday, we enjoyed a yummy and fun lunch out with Grandma and Grandpa F., and Anna also had her first real babysitting job that evening for a family in our neighborhood.  She did a really great job helping to put the boys (Charlie, age 5 and Jones, almost 2) to bed and then helping Jones get back to sleep when he woke up a little while later.  She was there until 11:30pm and didn't even fall asleep!  It was a big weekend for Anna, between the dance and that!  Bob enjoyed going to Martinsville for a NASCAR race on Saturday with Chris, Logan, Ben, Doug, and Sean, and we ladies took it easy and I also helped sort fundraiser shirts at school that afternoon.  We carved pumpkins that evening, too!

Monday was Halloween - the kids got to wear their costumes to school, and Erin went trick-or-treating at Vera's while Anna had friend Gracie over here.  We had a fun time at neighbor friend Ms. Karen's annual potluck dinner in her driveway, then braved a short rain shower and enjoyed seeing kids in costumes and scoring lots of candy.

So, that was October.  It was fun, busy, and I am now excited for my favorite month of the year!  Bring it on!

Erin is 14!

Our big girl turned 14 on Sunday!  While people often say "where has the time gone?", I tend to think that it feels like she's been around for about 14 years.  Not to say that in a bad way, but Erin has done so much and has been such a big and wonderful part of our lives for a long time now - it feels like about 14 years!

She's had an extended "birthday season", as we like to say, beginning on Saturday the 15th.  We had a really fun time at the Buddy Walk with Elliott and family in Charlotte and then got to visit and celebrate at their house after!

Phase 2 of Erin's birthday celebration was on Friday the 21st, when friends Olivia, Vera, and Elena came over to hang out during the teacher workday and then we all went to Kabuki for a memorable birthday dinner.  Olivia and Vera wanted sushi and decided to order the "Sushi Titanic for 2", which was quite impressive!  I don't eat much sushi, but apparently a "sushi boat" is a thing...but this one was accurately dubbed the Titanic!  The girls had a really fun time going out together.

Sunday was her actual birthday, and was filled with everything that Erin likes.  We started out with presents from us and waffles, then Mass, Starbucks, then a family hike at Hemlock Bluffs, shopping, and then Chipotle for dinner with cake and singing.

The final phase of her celebration will be this coming Saturday when we will get to see Grandma and Grandpa Flanagan!  Erin has stretched this birthday into two full weeks!

So, what's new with Erin this year?  She continues to be an incredibly hard worker.  She is organized, meticulous, and always does the very best that she can do, no matter what the task may be.  We cannot ask for more than that!  Ballet and piano continue to be her passions outside of school, and we are very proud of all that she has accomplished in both.  She was invited to participate in a piano ensemble this winter with some high school students, and she is super excited about that!  She takes school extremely seriously, which is great in terms of her academics, but she finds other kids who don't feel the same way to be very annoying ;) She's become independent with school, which feels weird to me to not be studying with her like we used to, but it is a wonderful thing!

She's got her 3 best friends, as well as a few others who she also enjoys hanging out with.  She has fully immersed herself in the teen life of texting friends, hiding in her room, and maintaining music playlists on her phone.  We do not take this for granted, and it warms my heart when she throws a little attitude my way like a 14 year old should!  She isn't focused on earning money like Anna is, mostly because she is a saver - her allowance and gifts more than cover what she wants to buy.

This is her last year at her school, and we are in the throes of making the big high school decision.  She will visit Cardinal Gibbons in early November, as will Bob and I at a different time.  We are hoping that we will have a better idea of what to do after those visits.  It will be an exciting year ahead as she enters this fun and exciting time in her life!
